Mortgage or rent
Reduce or clear a major monthly commitment while treatment and recovery take priority.
Critical illness cover can provide a lump sum after a diagnosis that meets the policy definition, helping you focus on recovery, family and the commitments that do not simply stop.

What critical illness cover does
Critical illness insurance normally pays a one-off benefit if you are diagnosed with a condition listed in the policy and meet its exact definition. The main benefit usually pays once, after which that cover ends.
It is not designed to cover every illness, every diagnosis or every period away from work. That is why policy wording deserves as much attention as price or the number of listed conditions.
Benefit consideredSubject to all policy terms and any applicable survival period.

How a claim is assessed
Two policies can both list the same condition while defining it differently. Type, severity, symptoms, treatment and permanence can all form part of the claim test.
Medical diagnosisA relevant clinician confirms the condition or procedure.
Definition matchedThe insurer checks the diagnosis against the contract wording.
Evidence reviewedMedical evidence and all other claim requirements are considered.
Claim decisionThe insurer confirms whether a full, additional or no benefit is payable.
What the money could support
A successful claim does not prescribe how you spend the benefit. Its purpose is to provide capital when serious illness creates pressure on income, commitments or day-to-day life.
Reduce or clear a major monthly commitment while treatment and recovery take priority.
Create financial breathing room if earnings fall or a partner takes time away from work.
Help with travel, support, rehabilitation or other costs arising around a serious illness.
Fund eligible changes to make day-to-day life at home more manageable.

Three different protection jobs
Protection works best when each policy has a clear role. One product should not be assumed to do the job of another.
Usually a lump sum when a listed condition meets the policy definition.

A longer list is not automatically a stronger policy. Definitions, partial benefits, premium structure and exclusions determine how the cover may respond in practice.

Ask a protection questionA successful claim normally provides a one-off lump sum that you can use as you choose. For example, it could go towards a mortgage or rent, household bills, treatment-related travel, recovery costs or adapting the home. The policy pays only when the diagnosed condition meets its definition and all claim requirements are satisfied.

Critical illness cover pays only when a valid claim meets a condition definition and all other policy terms. Not every illness, diagnosis, cancer or period away from work is covered.
If premiums stop, cover may end. Critical illness insurance generally has no cash-in value. Do not cancel existing cover until replacement protection is accepted, in force and fully understood.
